CHRISTIAN LINDBERG 50 YEARS AS AN ARTIST 1976-2026

1976(18years old) Solo Debut Stockholm Concert Hall Rimsky-Korsakov Trombone Concerto (after having played trombone for only 11 months) in front of the legendary Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme who sat on first row with tears in his eyes.

1977(19) Winning audition for position in Royal Stockholm Opera Orchestra. Participating in the world premiere of Ligeti´´'s amazing opera ”Le Grande Macabre, as well as Götz Friedrich´s legendary production of Wagner´s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

1978(20) Leaving orchestra and founding The Swedish Brass Quintet, deciding as first in history to carve out a solo career on the trombone. 

1979(21) Winning British Council´s Major Scholarship for studies in London with monthly salary for a full year!

1980(22) Receiving ARCM Diploma ”with honor" from Royal College of Music, London

1981(23) Winning his first international solo competition (Biennial for Nordic Soloists all categories)

1982(24) Making solo debuts in four Nordic countries(Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland)

1983(25) Spending 7 month in Los Angeles preparing for first recorded album, for BIS, an album that made international critics name him "Paganini of the Trombone” and "Segovia of the Trombone” and led to over 200 albums on BIS Records, Deutche Gramophone, Decca, Delos, Denon, ECM, and European Gramophone and more.

 

1984(26) Winner of Frank Martin Competition in Rotterdam(both first prize and Maria Martin´s personal prize.)

1985(27) Stunning reviews in London Times and Daily Telegraph after Wigmore Hall Recital Debut

1986(28) US Solo debut with orchestra in Chicago Grant Park(CBS live TV and Radio) in front of a record audience of 800000 people!! 

1987(29) First solo with orchestra CD released with Bamberger Symphoniker for BIS

1988(30) Solo debut´s with orchestras in Hongkong and Australia. German debut in Schleswig Holstein Festival and Rheingau Festival.

1989(31) World Premiere of Motorbike Concerto, performed since then by CL over 700 times.(An enthusiastic Ingemar Bergman and 1500+ others gave him standing ovations) 

1990(32) Premiering no less than 12 new trombone concertos all from memory

1991(33) Japanese Debut in Tokyo and Osaka leading to over 30 concert visits there up until today. Offered ten year Artist salary from the Swedish Government. 

1992(34) Traveling 240 days with 150 concerts all over the world as soloist with orchestras, something that from this year has become a habit up until today. Nominated for BBC artist of the year side by side with Valerij Gergiev, Gidon Kremer and Yo Yo Ma.

1993(35) ZDF/La Sept, France, YLE, Swedish Television and Arte makes the award winning documentary ”The High Flying Lindberg”, a documentary about Christian where they followed Lindberg over a two year period.

1994(36) Premiering trombone concerto no 35 from memory by Toru Takemitsu(no 32 by Xenakis 33 by Pärt 34 by Schnittke). Solo Recording with Concertgebouw Orchestra and Ricardo Chailly on Decca. Purchasing his 40 000 square-meter peninsula in the Stockholm Archipelago where he eventually builds European Gramophone recording studio. 

1995(37) BBC Proms debut with BBC Philharmonic World Premiere of Dominique Muldowney Trombone Concerto. Release of his 15th solo album, ”Lindberg 10 year Jubilee” on BIS.

1996(38) Touring Australia with Australian Chamber Orchestra filling Sydney Opera House three evenings in a row. Solo Recording on Deutsche Gramophone with Kanazawa Chamber Orchestra.

1997(39) After world premiere of Sandström´s Wahlberg Variations persuaded  by Royal Northern Sinfonia to start a conducting career. Refusing 5 times but giving in after the 6th attempt by the orchestra accepting a date October 2000, so that he could prepare studying with Leif Segerstam, Paavo Järvi, Neeme Järvi, James de Preist and Gilbert Varga.

1998(40) Premiering his first composition, Arabenne for Trombone and Strings, receiving stunning reviews and two commissions the next day. Appointed ”Prince Consort Professor of Trombone at Royal College of Music in London.

1999(41) Making his debut as an opera singer/performer as ”Abulafia" in Berio´s last opera ”Chronaca del Luogo” at the opening of Salzburg Festspiel, as well as premiering Berio´s trombone concerto SOLO from memory with the Tonhalle Orchestra, Zurich

2001(43) After having accepted conducting engagement no 2 and 3 ever with Swedish Wind Ensemble and Nordic Chamber Orchestra Lindberg signs contracts as chief conductor with both orchestras, contracts that are renewed 3 times lasting until 2011 and 2012.

2002(44) Solo Debut with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (first Swedish instrumentalist in history) and Chicago Symphony Orchestra(first Swedish instrumentalist in history). Receiving the medal Litteris et Artibus from The King of Sweden.

2003(45) Stunning reviews for trombone concerto No 1 ”Mandrake in the Corner” leading to a composition commission from Chicago Symphony Orchestra. 2003-2006 Lindberg composes the piece based on poems by Carl Sandburg.

2004(46) Lindberg makes his German conducting debut with Jenaer Philharmonie leading to several re-invitations as conductor by several German orchestras, such as Deutche Staatsphilharmonie, Dusseldorfer Symphoniker, Nurnberger Symphoniker, Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, Wuertenbergische Philharmonie, Saarbrucken Opera Orchestra, Gurzenich Orchestra and others.

2005(47) Lindberg receives major orchestra commissions from Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Verdi Orchestra Milano and others. Lindberg´s first composition portrait SACD released on BIS records.

2006(48) Lindberg receives standing ovations and stunning reviews for the world premiere of his piece ”Chick-A-Bone Checkout” in Orchestra Hall Chicago, This was the first time it happened to a world premiere with Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 14 years. ”CHRISTIAN LINDBERG INTERNATIONAL SOLO COMPETITION” was founded in Valencia Spain, 41 competitors from 26 countries competed and the winner was Frederic Belli, Solo Trombone of the SWR Symphonieorchester, Germany. 

2007(49) Lindberg puts his ”Nordic Chamber Orchestra” on the international map with 9 concerts in Japan, Korea, China and Germany. Their debut recording ”Nordic Showcase” on BIS records receives stunning reviews all over the world.

2008(50) Lindberg makes his ”conductor/composer/soloist debut” with Rotterdam Philharmonic (world premiere of ”Waves of Wollongong for 9 trombones and orchestra, Rautavaara symphony no 7), Swedish Radio Orchestra(Chick a bone Checkout/Alfvén Symphony) and Verdi Orchestra in Milano(World Premiere Timpani

Concerto/Dvorak 9). Lindberg´s second composition portrait SACD released on BIS records.

2009(51) Lindberg signs his third chef conductor contract with Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic, a contract that is renewed 3 times lasting until 2019. A new one hour documentary called ”Hat off for Christian Lindberg” is released both on Swedish Television and internationally. 

2010(52) Performing Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony in Mariinsky New Concert Hall in St Petersburg with Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic, receiving 14 curtain calls and stunning reviews for this by one of the most influential critics in Russia.

2011(53) Starting ”The Allan Pettersson Project" recording all the 17 symphonies by this giant with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Touring throughout China with Norwegian Arctic Philharmonic and starting a recording project with Tchaikovsky 4-5-6 on BIS with the same orchestra.

2012(54) Receiving Golden Clef for his recording of Pettersson´s 6th Symphony in ResMusica France. Conducting debut with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

2013(55) Heading in to unchartered territory by creating his own concert agency Arabenne Art Events leaving the traditional system of International Artist Managements and becoming independent.

2014(56) Making his Musikverein Debut in Tchaikovsky 4 receiving standing ovations and stunning reviews. Receiving Gramophone Critic´s choice of the year for Pettersson Symphony No 9. Lindberg´s third composition portrait SACD released on BIS records with Odense Symphony Orchestra

2015(57) Voted Greatest Brass Player in History by the worlds biggest classical radio station ”CLASSIC-FM”. Signing a five year contract with Israel NK Orchestra rated best orchestra in Israel side by side with Israel Philharmonic.

2016(58) Receiving International Classical Music Award "Artist of the Year” previously given to Charles Dutoit, Krzysztof Penderecki and Esa-Pekka Salonen 

2017(59) Touring Japan with Arctic Philharmonic with Tchaikovsky 4.5 and 6 as well as Musikverein with Norrköping Symphony being the first orchestra to present Allan Pettersson in Vienna, leading to stunning reviews and standing ovations.

2018(60) Concertgebouw conducting debut, touring as soloist with Zubin Mehta in Berio´s trombone concerto, in italy, Germany and Israel. Lindberg´s Bernstein-recording with Royal Liverpool Philharmonics receives sensational reviews in more than 30 papers, including this quote from BBC Music Magazine: ”Christian Lindberg shows his mettle as a conductor, keeping the ensemble light, tight and always on the ball. The testosterone and energy level remain dauntingly high, so buy this album by all means: it contains Bernstein at his punchiest best”.

2019(61) Touring Scandinavia and Spain with israel NK Orchestra receiving stunning reviews and standing ovations. Lindberg´s fourth composition portrait SACD released on BIS records with Royal Flemish Philharmonic, including his first symphony ”2017", receiving five star reviews in The London Times and New York Times.

2020(62) Creating the brand new recording company EUROPEAN GRAMOPHONE together with Per Egland, a company that within the two first years streamed almost 30 million, and having until today released over 200 albums. He also buys a Steinway and Son(Hamburg) model D and builds a brandnew recordig studio at his mansion Valudden in the Stockholm Archipelago. 

2021(63) Running his 11th marathon in a hotel room in Taiwan during a quarantine period waiting to come out and conduct Taipei Symphony Orchestra. 

2022(64) Slowly opening up after pandemic touring with Roland Pöntinen in Japan and elsewhere(40th anniversary tour). Composing his second symphony ”2022" as a tribute to Ukraine. Writing his first film music score to Pier Luigi Ferrandini ´s film ”Percoco” winning prize in Bari International Film Festival.

2023(65) Standing ovation and stunning reviews for his 133rd concerto premiere, Sandström´s 3rd trombone concerto with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Releasing recordings with ADDA Symphony Orchestra(Schumann 4), Liepaja Symphony Orchestra(Sibelius 2), Romanian Radio Television Orchestra(Tchaikvosky 5 and Brahms Academic Festival Overture) Nürnberger Symphoniker(Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet) and much more!

2024(66) Negotiating his 5th chief conductor´s contract(still not official) and an almost totally full season with recordings, commissions and concert activities all over the world. Touring USA(nine cities) with pianist Roland Pöntinen(delayed 40th anniversary tour)
